Kyazanga Community Core problems
Like many communities in
(i) Poverty among people
This makes people have limited access to social services, which hinders production e.g. parents are unable to send their children to school to get basic education.
(ii) Poor health services and primary health care which lead to incurable diseases, which hinder development.
(iii) Lower levels of education
This is another core problem of the community, production is still low, this leads to low income because most of our people do practice peasant farming which leads to poverty. A vicious circle of poverty and the parents fail to send pupils to school. A vicious circle of poverty then flows. That is low out put, poor quality production, lower sales and poor market then poor education.
(iv) High incidence of communicable diseases:-
There is a high incidence of cases of communicable diseases that are related to poor sanitation, poor hygiene such as dysentery, diarrhea, cholera and born diseases. This reduces production, and the little money that comes in is spent on treatment of avoidable diseases, which is due to poor sanitation.
(v) Prevalence of diseases among crops and animals e.g. coffee wilt disease has affected a lot in the income of the coffee farmers which has left all coffee shambers dry, hence low income from production.
(vi) Narrow community income from external sources
Less known community and hence less external income for development and this hinders development which leaves work planned undone.
(vii) Prevalence of HIV/A1DS
This has affected the working class, the youth and middle age group which produce hence leading to low production.
(viii) Gap between the Government leaders the grass root people.
There is a big gap between the government and the people who are termed as the people who make up the government. The difference is because there is no proper bridge to connect the locals and the government.
(ix) Inadequate transport facilities:-
The Community lacks transport facilities for proper transportation and also all the involved parties willing to provide developmental activities are hindered from performing their work effectively and efficiently. This creates poor service delivery in most of the social services, which are badly needed by the community.
(x) Environmental issues
Kyazanga Community is endowed with fertile soils, good pastures, two wetlands, with vegetation cover in some parishes, a growing trading center (Kitooro T/C) However with human practices all the beauty is being adversely affected-Challenges
§ Soil erosion due to poor farming methods
§ Over grazing / over stocking
§ Poor waste management & poor physical planning
§ Drainage of wetland / cultivation
§ Construction in wetlands
§ Poor disposal of polythene papers
The problem of dumping polythene papers is becoming a menace because gardens are getting spoilt because of this and there is an urgent need for us to come up with alternative for polythene; otherwise they will soon cause serious problems.
What can be done?
a) Bring health services nearer to the people and improving the standards of the health units making sure they are well staffed and stoked with drugs.
b) Reduce on diseases that affect people because of poor primary health care, poor water and sanitation through intensified health education and proper sanitation strategies.
c) Provide people with safe water through constructing valley dams, providing piped water, constructing shallow wells in all areas with potential of shallow wells and repairing bore holes.
d) Provide children with quality education so that they can be assured of a good future academically by implementing good standards of education and facilities eg identifying more good teachers etc.
e) Provide education to Adults to help reduce on the illiteracy levels in adults by providing adult education for them to acquire communication skills and learn some communication languages like English.
f) Enable people to market their produce easily by finding ways of increasing the market base in the community and outside the community.
g) Promote the living conditions of the youth, women and People with Different Abilities PWDs by forming more youth group, more women and PWDs group and helping them to start Income Generating Activities.
h) Rehabilitating roads so that people can easily market their produce and also to easy transportation which is another big problem in the community.
i) Providing people with improved varieties of seeds and animals.
j) Sensitize people on good health habits and better farming methods
k) We should support and promote extra curricular activities in schools particularly (music and sports) as these a media of communication in different aspects.
l) Sensitize community on gender awareness and children rights
m) Support and promote rights and development of children, youth, women, elderly people and PWDs in community.
n) Reduce law breakage and lack of order in the community.
We can try to provide community based services to the people including social rehabilitation, probation, welfare, culture preservation, gender issues, youth and children's affairs, community development and adult literacy programmes we will get there slowly by slowly and we will see that everybody in the community is happy, well off, with good jobs, education and having a long life.
